Revanta’s Mumbai Garuda defeated JSW Bengaluru Yodhas 5-2 to make it two wins out of two in the Pro Wrestling League (PWL) on Monday at the Guru Nanak stadium in Ludhiana. Apart from icon player Narsingh Yadav and Bajrang Punia, all the other wrestlers of Bengaluru suffered defeat against a spirited display of Mumbai Garuda.

Both teams had won their opening matches, with JSW Bengaluru Yodhas defeating UP Warriors 6-1 and Revanta’s Mumbai Garuda defeating CDR Punjab Royals 5-2.

At the start of the match, Mumbai Garuda won the toss and blocked the men’s 125kg and Bengaluru Yodhas blocked women’s 58kg. However, the organisers later announced that instead of men’s 125kg men’s 97kg will be blocked.

In the first bout of the day, Davit Modzmanashvili of Bengaluru Yodhas took on Levan Berianidze of Mumbai Garuda in the men’s 125kg category. With Georgian pride at stake, both wrestlers were neck-to-neck in the first two minutes. However, the Bengaluru wrestler went a point up in the last one minute of the round with Berianidze showing passivity.

The fortunes turned in the second round as passivity from Davit Modzmanashvili saw Berianidze level things up before he managed a quick take down in the dying seconds to win the bout 4-1 against the 2012 Olympics silver medallist.

In the match-up between Indians in the men’s 57kg category, Sandeep Tomar of Bengaluru Yodhas took on Mumbai Garuda’s Rahul Aware. With both wrestlers deadlocked after two minutes, the referee awarded one point to Aware with Tomar showing passivity. Aware increased his lead to 5-0 in the second round by flipping Tomar over to win the bout, thus doubling Mumbia’s lead to 2-0.

In the women’s 53kg, Bengaluru Yodhas’ Lalita Sehrawat took on Mumbai Garuda’s Odunayo Adekuoroye from Nigeria. The Indian proved to be no match for the Nigerian wrestler as she finished off the match in less than one and half minutes by racing to a ten-point lead to make it 3-0.

In the fourth bout of the day, Alyssa Lampe of the Bengaluru Yodhas took on Mumbai’s Ritu Phogat in the 48 kg women’s clash. Phogat started the bout by pushing Alyssa Lampe off the mat to score her first point. The Indian went to a 3-0 lead with a take-down on the American before Lampe came back roaring with a leg-lock to end the first round 6-3. Phogat, however, created the upset of the day as she caught Lampe off guard to pin her down to take Mumbai to an unassailable 4-0 lead with 3 bouts remaining.

With the match virtually over, Mumbai Garuda captain Adeline Gray took on Bengaluru’s Navjot Kaur. A three-time World champion in the 69kg women’s category, Gray finished off the bout in the first round itself as she raced to a 10-0 lead to win by point difference.

Bengaluru Yodhas' icon player Narsingh Yadav was next on the mat with his team in disarray at 5-0 to take on Pardeep of Mumbai in the men’s 74kg category. The only Indian wrestler to have qualified for the Rio Olympics, Narsingh showed his prowess in the first round by climbing to a 4-0 lead with a thigh-lock. The Bengaluru Yodha wrestler added two more points his tally in the second round to win a consolation bout for his team.

In the last bout of the day, Bajrang Punia of Bengaluru Yodhas faced off against Amit Dhankhar of Mumbai Garuda. It proved to be a close contest as both wrestlers notched up a point each in the first round to go into the break with the scores level at 1-1. Bajrang showed his experience in the second round as he won the bout 6-3 to bring some cheer to Bengaluru camp.

In the next match in PWL, UP Warriors will take on Dilli Veer on Tuesday at the Guru Nanak Stadium in Ludhiana. Both teams lost their opening matches, with UP Warriors suffering a 2-5 defeat to Bengaluru Yodhas and Dilli Veer suffering a 2-5 defeat to Haryana Hammers.
