Mumbai Garuda defeat Dilli Veer to continue unbeaten PWL run
Mumbai Garuda defeated Dilli Veer 5-2 to register their fourth consecutive victory of the Pro Wrestling League (PWL) at the KD Jadhav Wrestling Stadium in New Delhi on Monday. On the other hand, Dilli Veers suffered their fourth defeat of the tournament to end their chances of progressing into the semi-finals.
Exciting match of the evening
The battle between the sisters in the women’s 48kg category. Dilli Veer’s icon player Vinesh Phogat took on her cousin sister Ritu Phogat of Mumbai Garuda. The contest between the sisters turned out to be a one-sided contest asVinesh Phogat overpowered her rival. the 2014 Commonwealth games gold medallist opened the scoring within the first thirty seconds with a leg lock to add two points to her tally. The 21-year old Dilli Veer wrestler, who was suffering from fever, maintained her composure to defend her two point lead in the first round.
In the second round, Vinesh upped her game a level to increase her lead to 6-0 with a takedown. As the clock ticked down, the Commonwealth games medallist once again produced a takedown to put her rival on the mat to finish off the game 8-0.
Upset of the evening
The final bout witnessed former Asian champion Amit Dhankar defeating 2015 World Wrestling Championship silver medallist Ikhtiyor Navruzov 9-7 in the men’s 65kg category. The Indian added the first point of the bout with a takedown to put the Uzbek wrestler to the mat. Ikhtiyor came back with a takedown of his own in the dying moments of the first round to level things up in the match.
Amit raced to a 6-2 lead at the start of the second round with a leg lock to takedown the Uzbek wrestler. With a defeat looming large, the World championship silver medallist produced a takedown to put the Indian to the mat, but a brilliant reversal by Amit earned him one point to maintain his lead over Ikhtiyor. Right towards the end, the Indian notched up two more points to his tally to register a stunning upset against the World championship silver medallist.
In the next match of PWL, Haryana Hammers will take on Punjab Royals at the KD Jadhav Wrestling Stadium in New Delhi on Tuesday.
