Wrestler Sandeep Tomar qualifies for Rio Olympics
Indian wrestler Sandeep Tomar sealed his berth for the upcoming Rio Olympics with a win over Andriy Yatsenko of Ukraine at the World Olympic Qualifiers today. Tomar joins Yogeshwar Dutt, Narsingh Pancham Yadav, and Hardeep, to become the fourth Indian wrestler to qualify for the event.
After losing to Mirjalal Hasan-Zada of Azerbaijan (8-8) in the semis of the World Olympic Qualifiers held in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, Sandeep Tomar came back strong to beat Alexandru Chirtoaca 10-0 in the bronze medal match and Yatsenko 11-0 in the bronze medal play-off and secured the third and final quota for India in the category. Wrestling in the 57-kg freestyle category, Tomar defeated the two-time cadet World champion convincingly to book his ticket for Rio.
Tomar had earlier beaten Kyrgyzstan's Ulukbek Zholdoshbekov 4-1 in the quarters and Sezar Akgul of Turkey 11-0 in the pre-quarters to enter the final 4.
