Yet to receive cash award from Haryana government, claims Sakshi Malik

Olympic bronze medallist grappler Sakshi Malik has revealed that she is yet to receive the cash award promised to her by the Haryana government after her podium finish at the Rio Games. Cash rewards and incentives amounting to Rs 3.5 crore were announced by her state government.

Life changed for the better for the grappler after her medal win at the Rio Olympics in August last year. Accolades poured in and she was bestowed with the country's highest sporting honour - the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna. But her state government is yet to release the cash award promised.

"Medal ka vada maine pura kiya, Haryana sarkar apna vada kab pura karegi? (I fulfilled my promise of winning an Olympic medal for the country, when will Haryana government fulfil its promise?)," tweeted Sakshi.

The Haryana government had announced cash awards of Rs 6 crore to gold medallists, Rs 4 crore to silver medallists and Rs 2.5 crore for bronze medal winners from the state.

Malik asked whether the announcement was for the media only?

At Rio, Sakshi won the 58kg freestyle bronze by defeating Mongolia’s Orkhon Purevdorj and Aisuluu Tynybekova of Kyrgyzstan in the first and second repechage rounds respectively. With the come-from-behind victory, she became the first Indian woman wrestler to bag an Olympic medal.
