After missing the Asian Games with a serious leg injury, Indian wrestler Rahul Aware has stated that he is confident about coming back for the World Championship trials. He was forced to abandon the trials on his doctors advise as he would have to deal with the risks of a surgery.

The Wrestling Federation of India had postponed the retrials in the 57kg category to 26th June on Rahul's insistence. But, his leg injury worsened before the trials and the on his doctor's advice, he had to miss the trials after a glorious Commonwealth Games campaign. Aware has however been dead set on coming back for the World Championship trials clarifying that although the Wrestling Federation of India had delayed the trials because of him, he had no motivation to purposely miss out the trials.

As per an MRI scan available with PTI, Rahul's injury revealed a partial strain in anterior cruciate ligament with minimum joint effusion.

“Why would I miss trials when it was delayed on my request by the WFI. And I have a good record against all these wrestlers, I have beaten them a number of times, so why would I be scared of anyone. The doctor told me that it will be a risk if you compete and if anything goes wrong, it will require surgery to heal, that’s why I had to miss trials,” said Aware to PTI.

“There is always a tight contest between me and Amit Dahiya but I have a superior record against all wrestlers who appeared in trials on Tuesday. There was no competition for me. And it took me 10 long years to win a CWG gold medal, I felt ready for Asian Games, so why would I miss it?,” he added.

Rahul also revealed that he would follow a hard practice routine and make it in the Indian Squad for 61 kg category.

“I have told WFI president that I would compete for Worlds and he said okay. So I will come back and fight for a place in the 61kg category,” said Aware.
