WFI to ban and fine coaches as well if wrestlers fail dope test

In one its first, the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) has decided that in case a wrestler was caught failing a dope test in national camp, then the coach would also be banned and fined alongwith the athlete. This move was taken after the federation had to pay Rs 32 lakhs as fines to UWW.

Doping has been a menace in sports since its very inception and outgrown it over the years with the guardians forced to come up with various new measures to keep it in check. And the WFI has come up with a unique one of their own.

The federation had to pay Rs 32 lakhs as fines to international governing body United World Wrestling (UWW) in the last two years as their wrestlers were caught doping.

“The federation has decided that if results of dope tests of any wrestler during national camp and international championships are found to be positive, then not only the athlete but also all the trainers at the camp will be barred and penalized,” WFI said in a statement.

The coaches will now be having the added responsibility where they have to continuously vigilant of the food and drinks that the athletes training under them would be in-taking.

 “If a trainer finds a wrestler suspicious or if there is any wrestler who does not follow the directions of a trainer, then he can inform the Federation’s office. Action will be taken by the Federation in this regard,” the statement further read.
