The Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) has announced a 30-member Indian squad for the Under 23 World Championships 2019 in Budapest, Hungary from October 28 to November 3. India managed to win only one medal at the last U-23 World Championships held in Bucharest, Romania in 2018.

As declared earlier by the WFI, the performance at the recently held under 23 National Championships at Shirdi has been taken into consideration for the selection of the squad. Apart from Junior World Championship bronze medalist Viky who has replaced Sikander in the squad, all the selected wrestlers won gold medals at the U-23 National Championships.

Maharashtra wrestler Sikander, who had emerged champion in the 92 kg category at the Nationals, has reportedly suffered an injury that is keeping him out of the Worlds.

India managed to win only one medal at the last U-23 World Championships in Bucharest, Romania in 2018. Ravi Dhaiya was the lone medal winner with silver in his bag for India at the last world championship, but this time WFI is expecting better performance from the selected 30-member squad.

WFI has also declared that a preparatory camp for the U-23 World Championship will start from Monday for both girls and boys in Lucknow & Sonepat respectively. The men’s and women’s squad will depart for Budapest on October 26.
