Vinesh Phogat sustains injury during training, to be ready in time for CWG 2022
After a collision with her partner, Bhavika Patel, during a practice session at the SAI facility in Lucknow on Friday, top wrestler Vinesh Phogat of India sustained an injury. While Vinesh got 10 stitches, Patel got 12, and the former has been advised 10-day bed rest before the CWG begins.
Fortunately, Vinesh Phogat's injury won't prevent her from competing in the Commonwealth Games 2022, which are set to start on July 28 in Birmingham, UK. The CWG 2022 wrestling competitions begin on August 5. Before starting training again, Vinesh and Bhavika have been instructed to take a 10-day break.
Vinesh Phogat won't be prevented from participating in Birmingham 2022, but the hiatus will undoubtedly affect how she trains for the annual competition. Vinesh Phogat, a two-time gold medalist from the Commonwealth Games, will compete in Birmingham's women's 53kg event.
Since Indian wrestlers had to forego the Matteo Pellicone Ranking Series in Rome and the Grand Prix of Spain in Madrid due to postponed visa processes for the Birmingham Games, Vinesh Phogat has already missed significant pre-CWG contests.
The Zouhaier Sghaier Ranking Series in Tunis, Tunisia, from July 14 to July 17, which could be the final major competition Indian wrestlers can compete in before the 2019 Commonwealth Games, should see Vinesh in shape given the timetable of her recuperation.
