MS Dhoni : I get better with age like wine

MS Dhoni believes he is getting better with age like vintage wines do after his exceptional 78-run knock against West Indies in the third ODI. The former Indian skipper also termed his innings special owing to the slowish nature of the pitch and the variable bounce that came along with it.

MS Dhoni upheld the tag of a finisher when he helped India cross the 250-run mark in the last over of the Indian innings with a boundary on the last delivery. Dhoni weaved a 70-run stand with Ajinkya Rahane and followed it up with an even better 96-run partnership with Kedar Jadhav as India smashed 100 runs in the last 10 overs of the innings.

Dhoni was at his best even behind the stumps as he sent Windies skipper Jason Holder packing at 6 with a trademark stumping. The 35-year old has been inconsistent with the bat in recent times but has proved himself time and again when called upon to do so.

When the reporters asked him how come he gets better with age the former Indian skipper wittily replied, "It’s like wine."

The Indian top-order has fired in the recent past and is continuing to do so which has resulted in the middle-order not getting many opportunities. Dhoni noted the top order's consistency and stated that it felt good when he cashed in the opportunity that came his way while suggesting that the nature of the pitch made his innings even more memorable.

“Our top-order has been doing the bulk of the scoring in the last one-one and a half years, so it felt good to get an opportunity and score runs,” the former Indian captain stated.

“I think it was the nature of the wicket (what made the knock special). There was variable bounce and at times the pace. It was important to have a partnership at that stage. In my mind, I had 250, and we got there, with Kedar batting with me at the end. It was something the bowlers could defend, but they had to bowl well.”

The 35-year old wicketkeeper is always heard instructing the spinners from behind the stumps and did the same in the third ODI against Windies and the interaction also led to Jason Holder's wicket who was deceived by Ravichandran Ashwin and Dhoni's combination.

“It’s important (to guide spinners). Kuldeep has played a lot of games in IPL but when it comes to international cricket, it’s important to know where to use your variety. Once he plays 5-10 games, he will realise it himself. The good thing is, compared to the last game, he bowled very well today.”
