Team USA extended their lead at the top of the medals tally as Simone Biles won the women's individual all-around final and Michael Phelps won his fourth gold medal of this Olympics in the final of the men's 200m individual medley. Rafael Nadal also guaranteed himself of a medal in men's doubles.

Once again Simone Biles proved why she is considered as the greatest gymnast of all time by many. The American won the gold in the women's individual all-around final with a stunning display. She scored 15.866 on vault to take an early lead, but dropped down to second place after managing 14.966 on the uneven bars. But, Biles turned on the style during a splendid beam routine, where she scored 15.433, and then wooed the crowd with samba music during her floor routine. A score of 15.933 in her final routine took her tally to 62.198, almost two points clear of Alexandra Raisman, who won the silver. Russia's Aliya Mustafina, who was leading at the halfway mark, finished with the bronze.

Rafael Nadal and Andy Murray reached a step closer in their quest to become the first tennis player in history to win two Olympic gold medals in the singles. Nadal booked his place in the quarterfinal with a 7-6(5), 6-3 win over Frenchman Gilles Simon, while Murray defeated Italy's Fabio Fognini in a three-set tie 6-1, 2-6, 6-3. Juan Martin del Potro, local lad Thomaz Bellucci, and Frenchman Gael Monfils also moved to the last eight. Nadal will now take on the crowd favorite Bellucci in his quarterfinal fixture, while Murray will face American Steve Johnson.

Just two hours after winning his singles match, Rafael Nadal returned to the court to participate in the Men's Doubles Semifinal alongside his Spanish partner Marc Lopez. The duo defeated Canada's Daniel Nestor and Vasek Pospisil in a marathon match 7-6, 7-6, which lasted over two hours. With this result, Nadal is now guaranteed of winning a medal when they take on Florin Mergea and Horia Tecau in the final tomorrow.

Great Britain's Justin Rose made history on Thursday as he became the first golfer in history to record a hole-in-one at the Olympic Games in the first round of the men's tournament. Rose was one under par when he came to the par three fourth and hit a tee shot which flew 191 yards to land in the cup. The remarkable shot was the highlight as golf returned to the Games after an 112-year absence. Australia's Marcus Fraser is currently leading the event with a score of 8 under par.

In men's football, Brazil avoided an embarrassing elimination in front of their home support by beating Denmark 4-0 to advance to the quarterfinal. Gabigol, who scored a brace, starred for the home side, who will now face Colombia in the last eight.

In the women's individual archery event's final, South Korea's Chang Hye-jin stepped out of compatriot Ki Bo-bae's shadow before fending off a brave challenge from German Lisa Unruh to claim the gold medal.

Meanwhile, Michael Phelps won his 22nd Olympic gold medal, his fourth in Rio, in the final of the men's 200m individual medley. He finished a staggering two seconds ahead of the rest of the field with his timing of 1:54.66. Japan's Kosuke Hagino won the silver, while China's Shun Wang won the bronze.  Phelps' arch rival Ryan Lochte finished fifth.

In the final of the women's 100m freestyle event, USA's Simone Manuel and Canada's Penny Oleksiak tied for the gold medal. Both finished with a timing of 52.70 and created a new Olympic record in the process. Sweden's Sarah Sjostrom won the bronze.
