Nadal booked his place in the quarterfinal with a 7-6(5), 6-3 win over Frenchman Gilles Simon, while Murray defeated Italy's Fabio Fognini in a three-set tie 6-1, 2-6, 6-3. Juan Martin del Potro, local lad Thomaz Bellucci, and Frenchman Gael Monfils also moved to the last eight. Nadal will now take on the crowd favorite Bellucci in his quarterfinal fixture, while Murray will face American Steve Johnson.
Just two hours after winning his singles match, Rafael Nadal returned to the court to participate in the Men's Doubles Semifinal alongside his Spanish partner Marc Lopez. The duo defeated Canada's Daniel Nestor and Vasek Pospisil in a marathon match 7-6, 7-6, which lasted over two hours. With this result, Nadal is now guaranteed of winning a medal when they take on Florin Mergea and Horia Tecau in the final tomorrow.

He finished a staggering two seconds ahead of the rest of the field with his timing of 1:54.66. Japan's Kosuke Hagino won the silver, while China's Shun Wang won the bronze. Â Phelps' arch rival Ryan Lochte finished fifth.
In the final of the women's 100m freestyle event, USA's Simone Manuel and Canada's Penny Oleksiak tied for the gold medal. Both finished with a timing of 52.70 and created a new Olympic record in the process. Sweden's Sarah Sjostrom won the bronze.
