Raipur Rangers thrash Mumbai Tennis Masters in CTL
Raipur Rangers registered a comprehensive 25-15 victory against a hapless Mumbai Tennis Masters team in the Champions Tennis League (CTL) 2015 at Raipur on Tuesday. Raipur won all the five ties in the match-up, while Mumbai finished their season with no wins to their name.
In the CTL format, the final result is decided upon the basis of the aggregate score of the five-match tie. The five matches are in the category of legends (singles), mixed doubles, women's singles, men's doubles and men's singles. Each tie also consists of five sets.
In the legends’ tie, Thomas Muster of Raipur defeated Richard Krajicek of Mumbai 5-3 to give the hosts a winning start to the match.
In the women’s singles tie, Alize Cornet defeated US Open champion Flavia Pennetta 5-3 to extend Raipur’s lead to 10-6.
Raipur Rangers made it three out of three by winning the mixed doubles tie 5-4. Alize Cornet partnered Roberto Bautista Agut for Raipur, while Flavia Pennetta was joined by Colombian Santiago Giraldo for Mumbai.
In the men’s doubles tie, the Raipur duo of Roberto Bautista Agut and Ramkumar Ramanathan defeated Mumbai’s Santiago Giraldo and Sriram Balaji 5-3 to give the Raipur Rangers a 20-13 lead.
In the last tie of the day, Roberto Bautista Agut made it a perfect five out of five for Raipur as he finished off Santiago Giraldo 5-2 to give Raipur a massive 25-15 win.
Raipur will now take on Punjab in their second home match tomorrow to decide the winner of North Zone. Punjab lead the table with three wins from three games, while Raipur have two victories in three games. Punjab Marshalls had beaten Raipur Rangers 23-15 in their home match at Chandigarh earlier.
