Rohan Bopanna critical of Davis Cup team selection

Rohan Bopanna has voiced his displeasure at not being picked for the Davis Cup tie against New Zealand in February, calling for “logic and fair selection.” The 36-year-old also expressed unhappiness at receiving team news from the media and not the federation.

Bopanna is the highest-ranked doubles player in the country at 28th. However, the selectors opted for Yuki Bhambri and Leander Paes in doubles.

“I am not saying ‘pick me’. I just want logic and a fair selection, which will put up the best team at that moment,” Bopanna told The Hindu.

“I was asked about my availability and I confirmed it. Then I get to know the team from the media (that I’ve not been picked).”

After losing to Radek Stepanek and Adam Pavlasek in Davis Cup last year, Bopanna had requested to be paired with Saketh Myneni in the Rio Games instead of his old partner Leander Paes.

However, the pair of Myneni and Bopanna lost to the Kiwi duo of Marcus Daniell and Artem Sitak during the previous Davis Cup tie in New Zealand.

Bopanna said playing at home was different from an away leg.

“They say that Leander and I did not play well as a team against the Czech. That is what I had said before the Olympics!” Bopanna said. “First of all, it is not the same New Zealand pair that is coming to Pune. And, people should remember that Saketh and I have a 100 per cent record in home ties so far.”
