Sania Mirza, who was summoned in connection with an alleged case of non-payment of service tax, has denied any tax evasion and said that the Rs 1 crore given to her by the Telangana government was a "training incentive". Mirza’s chartered accountant was present before authorities yesterday.

Mirza landed in some off-court trouble after the service tax department in Hyderabad issued her a notice over an alleged tax evasion/non-payment on Feb 6. The 30-year-old women's tennis doubles No 1 was ordered to answer the summons either in person or through an authorized agent on Feb 16.

Mirza’s chartered accountant appeared on her behalf before the service tax authorities.

"Sania's representative submitted certain documents before the Service Tax authorities and contended that the Rs 1 crore she received from Telangana government was training incentive and the amount was not towards becoming the state's brand ambassador," official sources told PTI.

Sources had earlier said the amount she received for being brand ambassador falls under the Service Tax purview and it is due for tax payment. Rs 1 crore attracts service tax of 14.5 per cent besides interest and penalty has also to be paid on the tax.

In July 2014, the Telangana government had announced Mirza as the state's brand ambassador, and the one crore was towards preparations for major tournaments.
