Sindhu and Srikanth advance in Indonesian Masters badminton
P V Sindhu and K Srikanth comfortably went through to the quarter-final of the Indonesian Open on Thursday at Malang, Indonesia. The day, however, was mixed for India as H S Prannoy and R M V Gurusaidutt crashed out of the tournament.
Top seed P V Sindhu had a stroll in the park as she beat Wulan Sukoputri in straight sets 21-12 21-9. Sindhu led from start to finish in both sets and was never challenged as she wrapped the game up in 24 minutes.
On the men's side, top seed K Srikanth had two matches on the day. He had an easy outing in the second round as he outclassed Qiao Bin of China 21-12, 21-15.
The pre-quarters was a tightly contested affair as he faced stiff resistance from Saputra Angga before winning the nail-biting three-setter 21-14, 17-21, 25-23. After trading a set each, Srikanth seemed set for another early round exit today when he trailed 0-7 in the third set. The Hyderabad lad, however, recovered to equalize at 13-13 and then pulled ahead to 19-16 and 20-19. But Angga fought back to save four match points before Srikanth managed to close out at 25-23.
Third seed H. S. Prannoy lost to unseeded Chinese Shi Yuqi in a see-saw three-setter. Prannoy won a tight second set after losing the first, but Yuqi comfortably won the third to make it 21-12, 20-22, 21-13.
Eighth seed R. M. V. Gurusaidutt lost to lower-seeded Iskandar Zainuddin of Malaysia once again in a three-setter 21-14, 17-21, 21-15.
Sindhu faces unseeded Chinese player He Bingjiao, while Srikanth will face Teck Zhi Soo of Malaysia in the quarter-final on Friday.
