French Open Superseries: Saina deciphers Mitani puzzle; sole Indian in tournament
Saina Nehwal overcame her recent nemesis, Minatsu Mitani 21-19, 21- 15 at the French Open Superseries in Paris on Thursday. Saina remains the only Indian in the fray after a disappointing day for the Indian contingent as the rest fell by the wayside.
The Japanese was turning into the Indian's bugbear as she had ousted her in their only two encounters this year at the Japan Open and the Denmark Open. This time however, Saina held the lead almost all through in both the games. She forced her opponent into making the errors and wrapped it up at 21-19, 21-15.
Earlier, eighth seeded Parupalli Kashyap retired against Rajiv Ouseph of England 11-21, 21-13, 2-4. Kashyap had rallied back to take the second set comprehensively, but retired in the beginning of the third set.
HS Prannoy, who ousted Lin Dan in the opening round yesterday, failed to carry the momentum forward as he lost to Hong Kong's NG Ka Long Angus 21-15, 21-10 in 31 minutes. Dutch Open champion, Ajay Jayaram also packed up his bags as he lost to China's Tian Houwei 21-18, 21-8.
On the doubles side, Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponnappa lost to eighth seeds, Eefje Muskens and Selena Piek 21-15, 21-18.
