BWF rankings | Saina Nehwal moves down four places while Sindhu remains rooted at 10

Indian badminton ace Saina Nehwal has slipped four places down the BWF world rankings to occupy the 9th spot after her exit in the group stage at the Rio Olympics. PV Sindhu, who won the silver medal in the women's singles event at the Rio Olympics, has remained at 10th position in the rankings.

Saina Nehwal was World No.5 at the start of the Rio Olympics, and her Olympic campaign got off to a fantastic start with an easy win over Lohaynny Vicente. However, the former World No.1 suffered a shock defeat in her next group match against World No.61 Marija Ulitina in straight-sets, and exited the tournament in the group stage itself. Her coach later said that a knee injury was responsible for her below-par performance, and the 26-year-old was even admitted to hospital upon her return to India.

Her poor outing in Rio has had a massive impact on her ranking, as she has now dropped to 9th in the table. Interestingly, despite winning the silver medal in the women's singles, PV Sindhu remained rooted at 10th, while Nozomi Okuhara, who lost to Sindhu in the semis, has climbed up three places to become the World No.3. Olympic gold medalist Carolina Marin remained at the top, and she has now pulled away further from the chasing pack.

In men's ranking, Kidambi Srikanth, who exited in the quarters after a valiant effort against former World No.1 Lin Dan, has moved up one place to become the World No.10.
