World Superseries Finals | Sindhu looks to end season on a high
PV Sindhu is aiming to clinch the World Superseries Finals in Dubai this week to cap a breakthrough season that saw the Indian world No 10 bag silver at the Rio Olympics in August and her maiden Superseries title at the China Open.
However, the 21-year-old is clubbed with Spanish Olympic champion Carolina Marin, world No 6 Sun Yu of China besides Japanese world No 8 Akane Yamaguchi in a tough Group B.
“It's an honour to play in Dubai, it's an event that I have always wanted to qualify for. My form is good and hopefully it will continue in Dubai,” Sindhu said ahead of her opening match against Yamaguchi.
The Indian ace is 2-1 head-to-head against Yamaguchi, having beaten her in this year’s Uber Cup and the 2015 Macau Open. Her only defeat to her came in the 2013 Japan Open.
Sindhu will also face tough competition from Marin, whom she lost to in the Olympic final in August. The Indian beat Yu in Rio, but the Chinese poses a threat.
In Group A, world No1 Tai Tzu Ying of Chinese Taipei, Sung Ji-Hyun of South Korea and Ratchanok Intanon of Thailand and China's He Bingjiao, will fight for two semi-final spots from the group.
