World Superseries Finals | PV Sindhu makes winning start

Rio Olympics silver medallist PV Sindhu made a winning start to her maiden World Superseries Finals campaign in Dubai by defeating Akane Yamaguchi 12-21, 21-8, 21-15. The Indian world No 10 rallied from a first-game loss to beat the Japanese who is ranked two places higher.

Sindhu conceded an early 3-6 advantage in the opening game and Yamaguchi rode on her rival's mistakes to go up 14-7. The Indian won four straight points to narrow down the lead to 14-11 but a spate of unforced effors allowed the Japanese to regain control at 17-12 before sealing the game.

Sindhu jumped to a 4-0 lead in the second game before Yamaguchi levelled at 7-all. The Indian ace won four points on the trot to regain control of the match and thereafter powered on to lead 14-7. Sindhu then won seven points and conceded just one point as she wrapped up the second game 21-8.

The decider witnessed fast-paced rallies as Sindhu took early control at 6-3 and went into the break with a 11-7 advantage after Yamaguchi committed several baseline errors. The Indian maintained a five-point over her higher-ranked rival at 17-12 after the game and then went on to the finish the match by winning the third game 21-15.
