BWF China Open | Saina knocked out in the first round, Sindhu advances

Saina Nehwal has lost her first round game to unseeded Thai player Porntip Buranaprasertuk 16-21, 21-19, 14-21 at the BWF China Open today. However, Olympic silver-medalist PV Sindhu won her duel against Taipei’s Lee Chia Hsin 21-12, 21-16 to keep India’s medal hope alive.

Saina Nehwal, who made a comeback at the China Open after a serious knee injury sustained during Rio Olympics, couldn’t give her best in the game against Porntip. Prontip, who over-powered Saina to win the first-set 16-21. 

Saina, however, came back strong in the second set winning it by a slender 21-19 margin. But it wasn't meant to be as the Thai took the decider 14-21 and with that the match. 

With the loss 2015 runner-up, Saina, knocked out of the tournament, India’s medal hopes have not ended as PV Sindhu made the short work of Taipei’s Lee Chia Hsin 21-12, 21-16 to win her first round game. In the straight set victory, Sindhu outclassed her opponent to book a place in the second round.
