The Denmark Open ended abruptly for India as PV Sindhu, Ajay Jayaram, and HS Prannoy were knocked out in the 2nd round on Thursday. Sindhu lost to Sayaka Sato 21-13, 21-23, 21-18 in a marathon encounter, while Jayaram and Prannoy went down to Shi Yuqi and World No.1 Lee Chong Wei respectively.

Olympic silver medallist Sindhu raced to a 12-8 lead in the opening game against world No.12 Sato but the Japanese raised her game to win 6 points in a row before Sindhu could manage another point. Thereon Sato went on a 7-point spree to win the game comfortably.

The decider was a topsy-turvy affair. Tied at 18-all Sato raised her game once again to clinch three points in a row to win the match.

Earlier Jayaram lost to China’s Yuqi for the second time this year following the defeat at the Indonesian Masters. After Yuqi took a comfortable 20-15 lead in the first game, Jayaram saved five game points in a row to tie at 20 and again at 21.- Yuqiwon 23-21. The second game turned out lop-sided with the Chinese winning 21-15.

Prannoy put up a valiant fight in the second game after losing the opener 10-21. With the score tied at 20, however, Wei shifted gears to close out the match.
