PV Sindhu dished out a superb performance to record a 21-14, 21-15 win over unseeded Japanese Aya Ohori in a 40-minute match to enter the quarter-finals of the tournament. However, in the men's singles, Ajay Jayaram crashed out of the tournament after losing to Hsu Jen Hao 19-21, 10-21.

After defeating unseeded Indonesian opponent Dinar Dyah Ayustine in the first-round match, Sindhu upped the ante to even better position to produce a straight-game victory over her Japanese counterpart. The Hyderabad lass took just a tad over 40 minutes to register the 21-14, 21-15.

Sindhu, the 2014 edition bronze medalist, is the only Indian shuttler left in the tournament after Ajay Jayaram crashed out of the tournament after a second-round defeat against Hsu Jen Hao 19-21, 10-21. Jayaram had earlier upset Chinese fifth seed Tian Houwei 21-18, 18-21, 21-19 in the first round.

Earlier in the first round, Saina endured a three-setter before eventually going down to unseeded Sayaka Sato of Japan 21-19, 16-21, 18-21. Seventh seed Saina had a 6-1 head-to-head record over Sato before this clash but the lady luck didn't favour her after a one hour and eight minutes contest.
