BWF World Championship round up | Srikanth, Verma cruise to the next round as Men’s doubles pair Manu Atri-Sumeeth Reddy crash out
Kidambi Srikanth and Sameer Verma kicked off the campaign with comfortable wins against Russian Sergey Sirant and Spaniard Pablo Abian respectively. Men’s Doubles pair of Manu Atri and Sumeeth Reddy, however, were eliminated in the first round by Korean pair Chung Seok and Kim Dukyoung.
Srikanth was brimming with confidence as he took just 28 minutes to win the first-round match 21-13, 21-12 on Day 1 in Glasgow. Russia’s unseeded Sergey Sirant was hardly given any breathing space as the Indian shuttler took a 6-1 lead in the first game before winning the break 11-6.
The lead increased to 15-7 in no time and although Sirant did pull off some consecutive points, he was hardly a match for Srikanth who finished the first game 21-13. Though the second game wasn’t so one-sided with both exchanging points in the initial stages, Srikanth maintained a good six-point lead before sealing it 21-12.
Sameer was dominating his opponent 17-4 in the second game after winning the first one 21-8. A win was well within the sight when Spain’s Pablo Abian retired on medical grounds. The match lasted even shorter (27 minutes).
