'We broke the Chinese wall' Marin commends Sindhu and Saina

Reigning Olympic Champion Carolina Marin has said that, along with the Indian duo of Saina Nehwal and PV Sindhu, she broke the Chinese dominance in the sport of badminton. The Spaniard also added that she was confident Nehwal would be able to get back to her best once she regains her full fitness.

Even though it was Nehwal who first became the top-ranked player in the world, Marin has proved that she is the more talented of the duo by winning virtually every title available in the badminton world. The two, however, had to win against the host of Chinese players on the tour to achieve that.

"I think we broke the Chinese wall. Playing against Chinese players is always difficult. They are so many in numbers and play high-quality badminton," Marin said in an interview with NDTV.

Marin said that she expects Nehwal to become a force to be reckoned with as soon as she regains full match fitness. After an injury at the Rio games, Nehwal has struggled to get back to winning ways.

"Yes, I think Saina can play at a high level despite making a return from her injury. I think playing against her is always difficult and she has done well in the PBL," Marin said.

Marin, too, experienced a drop in form since her Rio 2016 triumph but in the PBL she has looked a lot like the player who dominated women's badminton over all of the last year. When asked about her views on the Premier Badminton League, she said, "I think PBL is a great event and we should have more such tournaments across the globe. It is good for spectators in India and around the world. All the top players are here and it's great for the spectators."
