BWF Rankings | Five Indian male shuttlers in top-20 for first time
For the first time ever in the history of badminton rankings, five Indian male shuttlers have entered the top 20 of the BWF singles list. Current World No.19 Sameer Verma has joined Kidambi Srikanth (8), HS Prannoy (15), B Sai Praneeth (17), and Ajay Jayaram (20) in the top 20 of the men's rankings.
Despite losing to Viktor Axelsen in the quarter-final of the Japan Open Superseries, Srikanth maintained his position as the World No 8, while Prannoy jumped four spots to reach 15th position in the BWF rankings. Sai Praneeth and Jayaram also maintained their positions at 17th and 20th respectively, while Verma became the fifth Indian to join them on the list by moving two places from 21st to 19th.
Ever since the last Olympics, the Indian badminton stars have continued to go from strength to strength with the likes of PV Sindhu, Kidambi Srikanth, HS Prannoy, and B.Sai Praneeth have proven that Sindhu’s medal in Rio was not a flash in the pan as they have consistently made it to the latter stages of major events. More importantly, this has also seen Indian shuttlers face off against each other in the finals of Superseries and Grand Prix level tournaments as was the case when Sai Praneeth faced compatriot Srikanth in the final of the Singapore Open Super Series event.
