Sourabh Verma wishes to make it to the squad which will represent India at Asian Games in Jakarta, Indonesia. Verma has also stated that competition in India has risen over the years with youngsters getting influenced by the success of Kidambi Srikanth and HS Prannoy at the international level.

In 2011, Saurabh Verma had won the National Championship for the first time which was followed by first international title viz. Bahrain International Challenge. Till the end of 2014 campaign, he already had 3 BWF series title to his name.

However, in the last few years, Sourabh Verma has been sidelined from the badminton court due to frequent injuries and it all started with the elbow injury back in 2015 which was followed by niggles and major ankle problem last September.

“Overall, last year for me was all about coming back from injury. Then I got injured again (ankle). I'm fit now and training well, but not completely tournament fit yet. I need to play a lot more matches," Verma told TOI.

Verma, who represented India at Incheon Asian Games back in 2014, is hopeful to make it back national squad to represent India in Asian Games in August. However, he won't put any extra pressure on him and would like to ease his way at top level.

"I would love to win here and next week (in Hyderabad) because of the Asian Games selection but I'm not putting that pressure on me. I want to play tournaments and get that continuity and get back to the level where I can compete at the top again," Verma said.

With more than 500 entries in All India senior badminton tournament and the success by Indian shuttlers in the last few years at the international arena, Verma believes the quality of badminton players has risen even at the national level.

"In India, the competition level is very good now. Youngsters are doing well and are motivated by (Kidambi) Srikanth, (HS) Prannoy and others who are doing well at the international scene. So that competition and rivalry comes right down to the national level," World no.71 said.
