BWF German Open | Parupalli Kashyap outplays Luis Penalver in three-game thriller

Parupalli Kashyap survived a three-game thriller in the second round of the 2018 BWF German Open as he managed to defeat Spain’s Luis Penalver by a final scoreline of 21-17, 19-21, 21-16. Meanwhile, Subhankar Dey beat Italy’s Fabio Caponio in straight sets to progress to round two.

Indian shuttler, Parupalli Kashyap, avoided an exit from the ongoing BWF German Open on Wednesday night after he defeated Spain’s Luis Penalver in what was a thriller of a game. Eighth seed Kashyap, who received a walkover bye in the first round, was stretched to three games by world No 86 Luis Enrique Penalver of Spain before the Indian won 21-17, 19-21, 21-16. Meanwhile, fellow compatriot Subhankar Dey made his way to a straight sets win over Italian opponent - Fabio Caponio. Dey knocked out the Italian by a scoreline of 21-18, 21-18 to progress further in the tournament in a match that lasted for 31 minutes.

But it was the end of the line for Harsheel Dani who was beaten by French sixth seed, Lucas Corvee, of the SaarLorLux Open BWF Tour Super 100 tournament in Germany on Wednesday. Dani suffered a 21-16, 21-18 loss to his French counterpart as he bowed out of the tournament.

In the women’s singles category, Saili Rane defeated Ukraine’s Natalya Voytsekh 21-19, 21-16 and set up a match with Russia’s Anastasiia Semenova in the next round. However, fellow compatriots - Prashi Joshi and Anura Prabhudesai suffered defeats to seeded opponents as they bowed out from the competition last night. While Joshi suffered a 21-6, 21-12 defeat to top-seed Gao Fangjie, Prabhudesai lost by a scoreline of 21-12, 21-13 to Bulgaria’s Linda Zetchiri.

In the men’s doubles event, Arun George and Sanyam Shukla progressed with a 21-18, 21-17 win over Netherlands’ Jacco Arends and Ruben Jille. Also, Arjun MR and Shlok Ramchandran thrashed Netherlands’ Vincent Braaksma and Switzerland’s Andreas Zbinden 21-9, 21-5 to progress to the next round in Germany. Arun and Sanyam, who have won three International Series titles so far, will go up against fourth seeded German pair of Mark Lamsfuss and Marvin Emil Seidel. Meanwhile, Arjun and Shlok, who clinched the Hellas Open title earlier this month, will face-off against the Chinese pair of Huang Kaixiang and Wang Zekang in the next round.
