Indian shuttlers PV Sindhu, Kidambi Srikanth handed easy draw at China Open

PV Sindhu and Kidambi Srikanth have been handed a kind draw at the China Open that will start from tomorrow, September 18, in Changzhou. The duo has been playing continuous badminton for a while now and appeared to be fatigued in their early round loses in the Japan Open last week.

Sindhu had been in tremendous form for quite a while and even though she has not been able to win too many titles, her consistency has been impressive. Not since the Denmark Open in 2017 had the Olympic silver medallist been eliminated in a major event in the initial stages. However, that changed in at the Japan Open last week where the Indian appeared to be fatigued.

Sindhu, however, has decided to participate in the China Open where she will square off against Cheung Ngan Yi of Hong Kong in her opening match. Should she manage to win that and beat the winner of the Beatriz Corrales-Busanan Ongbamrungphan clash, Indian fans will be in for a treat as a Sindhu-Saina encounter is possible. But for that Saina will have to come out of a tough couple of rounds that will see her face Sung Ji Hyun and Chen Yufei in back to back games.

Kidambi Srikanth, too, is the recipient of an easy draw facing Rasmus Gemke of Denmark in the opening round. The first major hurdle in Srikanth's path will be in the quarter final where he will face Japan Open winner Kento Momota. Despite falling out of the top-8, HS Prannoy would have breathed a sigh of relief after seeing Ng Ka Long Angus of Hong Kong as his first round opponent. He, too, will face his stiff competition in the quarter final going up against World No. 2 Shi Yuqi of China.

In the women's doubles event, Ashwini Ponnappa and N Sikki Reddy will be up against Korea’s Kim So Yeong and Kong Hee Yong while Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty will open their campaign against Malaysia's Goh V Shem and Tan Wee Kiong in the men's doubles event. Manu Attri and Sumeeth Reddy will take on Taiwan’s Liao Min Chun and Su Ching Heng in their first round clash at the Tour 1000 event.

Rankireddy will then join forces with Ponnappa in the Mixed Doubles event and will face Marcus Ellis and Lauren Smith, while Pranaav Jerry Chopra and Sikki will be up against Marvin Emil Seidel and Linda Elfer from Germany in the same event.
