BWF Malaysia Open | Kidambi Srikanth falters in quarter-final against Chen Long
Kidambi Srikanth failed in his bid to make it to the semi-finals of the ongoing Malaysia Open as he fell to a 21-18, 21-19 defeat at the hands of China’s Chen Long in the quarter-final encounter. The Indian ace was knocked out in the match against Long that went on for a little less than an hour.
Indian ace shuttler Kidambi Srikanth suffered heartbreak on home soil earlier this year when he lost in the final of the India Open to Denmark’s Viktor Axelsen. However, the Indian shuttler looked in good form at the BWF Malaysia Open as he defeated Thailand’s Khosit Phetpradab in round two by a scoreline of 21-11, 21-15.
In doing so, Srikanth set up a quarter-final tie with China’s Chen Long. However, the former world number one suffered a heartbreaking 23-18, 21-19 loss against the fourth seed to be knocked out of the tournament. The match between Srikanth and his Chinese opponent went on for 48 minutes.
The 26-year old gave a tough fight to Long in the opening game but had to settle for a 21-18 loss as the Chinese player kept his calm to see the game through. However, the second game was a completely different affair as Long dominated from start to finish to complete a straight-game win by a 21-19 scoreline in the second game.
This means that Kidambi’s 17-month drought is yet to be broken after narrowly missing out on the title in India and Malaysia over the course of the last week. With Srikanth's defeat in the quarter-final, the Indian challenge has also come to an end in Malaysia.
