Most of the big guns’ challenge in the Thailand Open ended on Thursday with the likes of Saina Nehwal, Kidambi Srikanth, and P Kashyap lost their matches in their respective events. However, the Indian contingent’s contention is still kept alive by B Sai Praneeth and the young men’s doubles pair.

Coming to the game as the seventh seed, after the likes of Akane Yamaguchi, Nozomi Okuhara, Tai Tzu Ying, and PV Sindhu pulled out Nehwal had a glorious chance to make it count. However, she went down 21-16, 11-21, 14-21 to Japan’s Sayaka Takahashi in the pre-quarters.

Kidambi Srikanth had made a strong start to the tournament with a comeback win in the first round, but his poor form got into pace with him in the second round on Thursday when he was against Thailand’s Khosit Phetpradab. After winning the first game 21-11, the Indian went on to lose 16-21, 12-21.

In the other game, Parupalli Kashyap lost 9-21, 14-21 to Taiwan’s Chou Tien Chen. The doubles pair of Ashwini Ponnappa and Swastiksairaj Rankireddy extended their winning run against Indonesian duo Fajar Alfian and Muhammad Ardianto by winning the match 21-17, 21-19.

The matches remaining for the day are the women’s doubles duo of Ashwini Ponnappa and Rankireddy going up against Indonesia’s Alfian Eko Prasetya and Marsheilla Gischa Islami, and HS Prannoy taking on Kenta Nishimoto.
