US Open Badminton | Lakshya Sen, HS Prannoy, Sourabh Verma make it to Round 2
Lakshya Sen defeated Parupalli Kashyap in straight games in the first round of the US Open badminton tournament in Fullerton, Calfornia on Thursday. He will now take on Sourabh Verma, who defeated Toby Penty, in the second round while HS Prannoy also managed to win his first match.
India’s youngster Lakshya Sen was able to stun his senior compatriot Parupalli Kashyap in the first round of the ongoing US Open to book a place in the second. Sen dominated proceedings against his senior as he took the game in straight games 21-11, 21-18 in the game which continued for only 31 minutes.
Sourabh Verma got the better of Toby Penty from England 21-23 21-15 22-20 in an hour and four-minutes contest to enter the second round of the championship and he will now take on Sen.
In the other men’s singles encounter in California, Prannoy came back strong after losing the first game to win in three games 21-23, 24-22, 21-18 against Japanese shuttler Yu Igarashi. The Indian will now meet Heo Kwang Hee from Korea in the second round.
Other Indians in the competition Ajay Jayaram, Sri Krishna Priya Kudaravalli and Aruna Prabhudesai couldn’t go past the first round and were knocked out. Jayaram lost to Wang Tzu Wei of Taipei 16-21 21-18 16-21 in an hour and five minutes.
Kudaravalli and Prabhudesai were defeated by Kim Ga Eun of Korea 11-21 8-21 and Taipei’s Lin Hsiang Ti 17-21 14-21 respectively in the women’s singles matches on Thursday.
