Indonesia Open | PV Sindhu advances into quarters, Kidambi Srikanth crashes out
Three out of four challenges in the four separate events of the Indonesia Open came to end as PV Sindhu lived up to the billing while Kidambi Srikanth crashed out in their respective matches. The mixed doubles and men’s doubles event saw the Indian pairs losing in straight games.
PV Sindhu started off quite well against the lesser experienced Mia Blichfeldt and as was expected of the Olympic silver medallist, she brushed aside the Danish shuttler 21-14. However, just when the fans thought that the Indian would seal her quarter-final berth with an easy win, Sindhu went down 17-21 forcing a nervous decider for the third game. However, she got back her mojo just in time as she sealed the match with a comfortable 21-11 win to book a quarter-final with Nozomi Okuhara.
The men’s doubles duo of Swastiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty had a pretty straightforward outcome. The duo was always going to be the second fiddle to the Indonesian duo of Gideon and Sukamuljo and they couldn’t produce any massive upset whatsoever. They lost the match 15-21, 14-21, thereby bowing out of the tournament.
However, the biggest upset of the day came in India’s third last match of the day where Kidambi Srikanth was taking on a lower-ranked NG Ka Long Angus of Hong Kong. While the fans expected the men’s shuttling ace to get the job done in the quarters, to everyone’s surprise, he went down 17-21, 19-21 to Angus thus ending India’s challenge in the men’s singles event.
The mixed doubles duo of Pranav Jerry Chopra and N Sikki Reddy had a difficult task against the star Chinese mixed duo of Zheng Si Wei and Huang Ya Qiong. The outcome was hardly a doubt for any and the Indian duo eventually lost 14-21, 11-21.
