Boxing | Mary Kom tops latest rankings released by AIBA

On the back of her World Championship winning performance last year, MC Mary Kom has been placed at the number one position in the 48kg category in the latest released AIBA rankings. Kom has already won the World Championship the 48 kg category a record six times - the most by a boxer.

A World Championship win in November last year has pushed the ranking of India’s most successful boxer Mary Kom to the numero uno position in the 48kg category. En route the sixth Championship title, she also became the most successful boxer in the Championship’s history. In the latest rankings released by the International Boxing Association (AIBA), Mary Kom has been placed at the number one position in the 45-48 kg category with a total of1700 points to her name. Okhota Hanna of Ukraine is placed behind her with 1100 points.

Though Mary Kom has a bronze medal from the 2012 Olympics to her name, she has said that she is targeting the gold at the upcoming 2020 Olympics for which she will have to move to the 51 kg weight category as the 48 kg category is not included at the Olympics. The boxer had a good run last year in which she won gold at the Commonwealth Games, the World Championships, and a silver at the Strandja Memorial in Bulgaria. 

Apart from Mary, Pinki Jangra is placed at the eighth position in the rankings in the 51 kg category. Whereas Manisha Maun is placed eighth in the 54 kg category. Sonia Lather managed to remain at the second position in the 57 kg category despite having a poor season in the year gone by. Simranjit Kaur was placed fourth in the 64 kg category as Lovlina Borgohain took the fifth position in the 69 kg category.
