The Indian chess arena has it’s youngest ever grandmaster in D Sukesh, who is just 12 years 7 months and 17 days old. He has beaten the previous record held by his friend R Praggnanandhaa who had become a grandmaster at 12 years 10 months of age. Sukesh has also become world’s second youngest grandmaster and has missed Sergey Karjakin’s record of becoming the youngest GM in the history of chess by only 17 days.

In December last year, Sukesh had missed the record when he lost his third round game against GM Daniele Vocaturo of Italy at the Sunway Sitges International in Barcelona. But, not one to get bogged the failure he got his final grandmaster norm at the Delhi GM Open 2019 on Tuesday.

For achieving a Grandmaster title in chess, a player must get himself three GM norms in tournaments having at least 27 games. An International Arbiter must be officiating in the event and the tournament must have at least three GM titled players from different countries playing over a minimum of nine rounds with not less than two hours time per round.
