Viswanathan Anand played out a fascinating draw with China’s Ding Liren to move up to joint third in the standings after the end of the 12th round at the ongoing Tata Steel Masters. Meanwhile, Magnus Carlsen and Anish Giri will clash in the final round to determine the winner of the tournament.

Five-time world champion Viswanathan Anand fought back as he played out an interesting draw with Ding Liren of China in the 12th round of the ongoing Tata Steel Chess Masters. In doing so, the Indian grandmaster moved to joint third in the standings with one round left to play in the tournament.

Anand played some fine defensive maneuvers to steer the game against Liren to a draw, While the Indian ace can no longer win the tournament, chances of a podium finish remain within reach as there is just one round more to come in the first super tournament of the 2019 season.

Meanwhile, Anand’s long-time rival Magnus Carlsen held onto his lead as he pulled off another dominating win over Jan Krzysztof Duda of Poland.

The Norwegian grandmaster took his tally to 8.5 points out of a possible 12 and is now a half point ahead of closest rival Anish Giri of Holland. Interestingly, Carlsen and Giri will clash in the final round to determine the winner of this year’s Tata Steel Chess Masters.
