Mithali Raj to be awarded Rs 1 crore by Telangana government

Telangana has announced a cash prize of worth Rs 1 crore for Indian women's team captain, Mithali Raj, for her exceptional performance in the ICC Women's World Cup 2017. The Hyderabad cricketer was congratulated by Telangana CM K Chandrashekhar Rao and will also be awarded a 600 sq yards plot.

Indian women's cricket team finished as the runners up of the ICC Women's World Cup 2017, losing out to England by a meagre margin of 9-runs. Nonetheless, the Indian women's team were applauded for their tremendous efforts in the tournament by the whole nation and rewarded by BCCI as well as various state boards.

Mithali Raj, the Indian women's cricket team captain, broke a plethora of records in the tournament, starting with becoming the first woman cricketer to score seven consecutive half-centuries. The 34-year old ended the tournament as the all-time highest run-getter in the 50-over format and the first Indian woman cricketer to score 6000 runs in ODIs.

Raj met the Chief Minister of Telangana on Friday along with her parents and was congratulated for the team's outstanding performance in the World Cup. At the meeting, a cash prize of Rs 1 crore and 600 sq yards house plot were announced as awards for the Hyderabad cricketer.

"You have played wonderfully at the World Cup. We thought you would be sure to win in the final too. Unfortunately, we lost by a slender margin. But yet your team performed well and the whole nation watched your performance," a release from CM's office quoted him as saying, reported PTI.

"I also watched the match. You have played very well in this tournament. You have set a record by scoring the highest number of runs. You have exhibited a wonderful talent. You are the pride of Telangana and Hyderabad city," he said.
