Champions Trophy 2017 | Pakistan pacer Wahab Riaz ruled out with ankle injury
Things just keep going from bad to worse for Pakistan. Following their heavy loss to arch-rivals India on Sunday, Pakistan were dealt another setback as their fast bowling spearhead Wahab Riaz was ruled out for the tournament with an ankle injury he suffered in the same game.
Certainly, Wahab Riaz wouldn't want to remember the opening encounter where Pakistan registered 124 run loss against India (DL method) and he proved expensive for his team, conceding 87 runs in 8.1 overs, without taking a wicket. During the same encounter though, he also twisted his ankle in the 46th over of the Indian innings. Following the injury, he was also unable to come to bat in the rain-affected match.
"Wahab Riaz twisted his ankle in yesterday's (Sunday's) ICC (International Cricket Council) Champions Trophy match against India," said a Pakistan Cricket Board statement, as reported by TOI.
"A scan has confirmed that Wahab Riaz suffered a deltoid ligament complex after an injury whilst bowling during the India v Pakistan match on June 4. It will take a minimum two weeks to recover from this injury. Wahab will not be able to continue to play in the remaining games of the Champions Trophy."
Following the injury to Riaz, the PCB has put in a request for a replacement player to the ICC Technical Committee.
The injury continues a horrendous year for Riaz as he has played only four ODIs and he conceded 260 runs, getting only two wickets at an average of 130 and an economy rate of 7.72. Hasan Ali and Mohammad Amir were also forced to leave the field against India because of cramps, which means that Pakistan now only have Junaid Khan and all-rounder, Faheem Ashraf, who is yet to debut, as fast bowling options.
Pakistan plays South Africa in their second group game on June 7 at Edgbaston.
Did you know, Kapil Dev holds the record for the best bowling figures in an innings of a test match as captain(9/83) and in fact,he is the only captain to take a 9 wicket haul in a test innings.
