Sunil Gavaskar to continue as PMG’s CEO after shutting down the player management wing

Sunil Gavaskar will continue to hold his post as the chairman of Professional Management Group after conflict-of-interest allegations against him forced his co-founded company to shut down the player management wing. It will continue to focus on events, public relations, content syndication, etc.

Following Professional Management Group’s (PMG) decision to shut down their player management wing earlier this month, Sunil Gavaskar’s position was still uncertain as there were ambiguities concerning his role as commentator in India games. However, the cricketing legend has decided to retain the chairman’s position of the company he had founded back in 1985.

Melroy D’Souza, the chief operating officer of PMG, said, “Other things will continue. He (Gavaskar) is the chairman of PMG. The basic part is PMG is now out of player management business.”

The company’s decision to scrap the player management business was spurred when the Board of Control for Cricket (BCCI) had asked Gavaskar to choose between commentary and player-management business. As per the Indian cricket board’s new norms, there will be no two sources of income from the BCCI.

Despite including Gavaskar in the commentary panel of the ongoing ODI series against Australia, BCCI had kept Laxman Sivaramakrishnan as standby, in case Gavaskar failed to meet the “conflict of interest” guidelines.

The 32-year-old company were managing players only since 2009-10 and had contracts of Shikhar Dhawan, Rishab Pant, Prithvi Shaw, Sarfaraz Khan as well as acclaimed hockey star Sardar Singh. Things, however, turned upside down when Ramachandra Guha pointed out the various conflict-of-interest issues of the company while stepping down from the Committee of Administrators.

Stating it as an act of jealousy, 68-year-old Gavaskar had earlier stated, “If there is a superstar culture, then there is also a jealousy culture … at people who have done something for Indian cricket, continue to do something for Indian cricket that they should not be allowed to do something for Indian cricket and those who have not done anything for Indian cricket, who have got a peripheral connection with Indian cricket should be allowed to do something.”

However, PMG has now stated that they will continue doing their businesses like events and content syndication, media & public relations, awards and ratings and more. “We want to do lot of work on events, there is lot of media content. One of the key areas is creating more IPs in sports arena and focus more on digital.”

PMG handles the well-known CEAT awards every year.
