ICC World Cup 2019 | England is one of the best ODI teams I’ve seen, reckons Steve Waugh
Former Australian captain Steve Waugh reckons the current English side as one of the best ODI teams he has ever seen. The star-studded English line-up has a plethora of match-winners who will be eyeing to lift the World Cup for the very first time in the final against New Zealand on Sunday.
England have been dominating ODI cricket after the 2015 World Cup and have rightly sculpted a spot in the final of the ongoing showpiece event. They beat Australia convincingly in the semi-final and are red-hot favourites for the big game. Australia’s World Cup winning skipper Steve Waugh has stated that the side is clearly one of the best he has ever seen.
“It’s one of the best one-day teams I’ve seen and would compete against anyone from previous eras but ultimately they will be judged on Sunday. If they win that they may go down as one of the great one-day sides. If they lose then I guess they’re just back to being one of the other teams that didn’t quite make it. They have the potential to be a great one-day team,” said Waugh, reported AFP.
England had a tough time in the 2015 World Cup but have grown as a side since then. Waugh believes the current English side has no evident weakness and are filled with match-winners. The likes of Jason Roy, Joe Root, Ben Stokes, Jos Buttler, Eoin Morgan, and Jonny Bairstow render batting a joy to behold.
“They play without fear. I think that’s very hard to do in professional sport and there’s no weakness in the side. They are a very good fielding side, they bat all the way down, numerous bowling options It’s a pretty complete side,” Waugh added.
