ICC World Cup | Mitchell Marsh flown in as cover as Marcus Stoinis out of Pakistan game with side strain
A side strain has ruled Marcus Stoinis out of Wednesday's World Cup match against Pakistan and the extent is such that he is a risk for the whole tournament. To compensate for that, Mitchell Marsh, who was supposed to tour England with the Australia A team, has been flown in early as cover.
The Aussie all-rounder picked up the side strain during Australia's match against India at The Oval and a final decision on Stoinis' future in the World Cup will be made after he is assessed again in the lead-up to Australia's next game, against Sri Lanka on Saturday at The Oval, a Cricinfo report read.
However, it has become tricky for Australia as the ICC rules state that a player ruled out of the World Cup can't be added back to the squad. But Australia will have to take a quick call on it as they don’t have a like-for-like allrounder in the squad and they have to make do without Stoinis for the period it takes for him to recover.
If Australia decide to go ahead without Stoinis, then Marsh will directly be added to the team. Marsh last played an ODI in January 2018 and was supposed to be in England for the A tour later this month. However, CA have decided to early his departure from Australia so as to allow the team the option of a back-up allrounder.
Earlier in 2009, Marsh was dropped from Australia's list of contracted players for the 2019-20 season after enduring a tough season. He lost his spot in the national side across formats due to poor performances, including twin failures against India in the Boxing Day Test match.
