Gautam Gambhir is set to get the honour of a stand named after him at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi. The Apex Council had discussed this plan back in June and unanimously it was decided that Gambhir would get the recognition but later it was called off due to some disagreement.

Former Indian opening batsman Gautam Gambhir will be honoured by naming a stand at the Arun Jaitley stadium which was formerly known as the Feroz Shah Kotla in Delhi. Gambhir has had very important contributions to Indian cricket and will always be remembered for his contributions in the World T20 Final in 2007 and the World Cup Final in 2011, both in the end helping India to famous wins. The Apex Council decided that the passion showed by Gambhir towards his nation and towards cricket deserved praise and recognition and had decided to name a stand after him.

“The Apex Council had approved the stand in Gautam Gambhir’s name. It was to be near the stadium end (Ambedkar football stadium),” DDCA joint secretary Rajan Manchanda told The Indian Express.

The homage to Gambhir was supposed to be given after the final of the hot weather tournament on Jun 22-23 but differences in opinion saw the plan being called-off later.

“It is unfortunate that we have not been able to honour the contribution of Gambhir to Indian cricket because of disagreements among members of the Apex Council. We had even ordered the large letters of his name to be put up on the stand. At today’s meeting of the Apex council members, it was decided to unveil the stand and felicitate Gambhir sooner than later,” Manchanda said.

The minutes of the emergent meeting of the Apex Council in the first week of June state: “The proposal was approved unanimously and the CEO was directed to take necessary action in this regard. He (Manchanda) proposed that one stand in DDCA may be named as ‘Gautam Gambhir Stand’ as a mark of recognition and appreciation of the contribution by Mr Gautam Gambhir in national and international cricket.”
