South Africa's Interim Director Enoch Nkwe has said that the T20Is against India will be a glimpse at the future for South Africa, as he believes Quinton de Kock will be permanently leading the team in no time. The series will also mark the first time that De Kock will be captaining the Proteas.
After a rather disastrous World Cup, the South African team are already on the fast track of recovery and now their first assignment in perhaps a new chapter in their cricketing books will be against India, who they will play 3 T20Is and 3 Tests against, starting September 15. With wicket-keeper Quinton de Kock all said to lead the side, Interim Director Enoch Nkwe believes that the T20Is will be a glimpse into the future for the Proteas, who, by the looks of things, are preparing for life without du Plessis, at least in the game's shortest format.Â
“We know where Faf stands as a captain and as a player. He has done great things for SA cricket. But we also need to look at what future looks like and we strongly believe in Quinton, who is going to be leading the team going forward,” Nkwe was quoted as saying by Sportstar.Â
“We have a good leader and it’s an opportunity to start building for the future,” he added.
Nkwe also admitted that these 3 T20Is will be the first step in the team's quest to start building towards the T20 World Cup in Australia next year. With new faces such as George Linde, Bjorn Fortuin and Anrich Nortje in the squad, it goes unsaid that the Proteas are already looking ahead into the future.Â
“It’s the start of a new chapter and focus will be the coming series against India. We would be looking to lay a good foundation going into the T20 World Cup next year in Australia. We still have a lot of games and have about 20 games (going into World T20) and we will assess the situation accordingly after these three games. Then build up for England series and so on,” Nkwe said.
“We have got a group of guys with good enough experience and the captain himself has played a lot of cricket in India. We have fresh blood that has come into the squad and that’s exciting and we will remain competitive," he added.
While there is some room for experimentation, Nkwe asserted that the primary aim of the team is to walk away with a series win and assured that his team will give all it takes in order to conquer Indian soil.
“Yes, we want to walk away with a series win and hope the entire squad is very determined. We are here to win and we understand that India’s position is strong in its backyard but we are going to give hundred per cent," Nkwe concluded.Â
