The Royal Challengers Bengaluru defeated the Delhi Capitals by six wickets to lead the points table with four points from a couple of matches. Three-fers from Georgia Wareham and Renuka Thakur made way for Smriti Mandhana’s 81 as the defending champions dented the previous edition’s runners-up.

Eyeing to field first and capitalize on the dew factor, Renuka Singh Thakur backed Smriti Mandhana’s decision to field first with a wicket on the second ball of the innings. Following  Shafali Verma’s premature departure, Meg Lanning and Jemimah Rodrigues added 59 runs together before the Indian batter fell to Georgia Wareham following a 55-run powerplay. The skipper of the team followed suit in the next over before Annabel Sutherland and Jess Jonassen went back to the hut in a space of five balls. With 95/5 in twelve overs, a 29-ball boundary drought followed after a four in the 13th over before Renuka and Wareham’s three-fers curbed them to 141 runs in 20 overs.

In reply, the defending champions got off to a booming start, courtesy of Smriti Mandhana’s elegant strokes. Initially, Danny Wyatt-Hodge played second fiddle to her skipper before a couple of fours against Shikha Pandey in the fourth over. The pair ensured to beat their counterpart's powerplay score (51) by extracting 57 runs in this phase. The introduction of spin made no difference as the pair orchestrated 31 runs in the next three overs with Mandhana racing to a 27-ball 50. A 14-run over followed suit as RCB reached 101/0 in ten overs. Subsequently, the English batter holed out at sweeper cover before a couple of missed chances made way for Smriti Mandhana’s wicket with nine required off 29 balls. It was just a matter of time before Richa Ghosh pummelled a four and six to steer the defending champions home with 22 balls remaining.
