The decision to field first seemed to work well for the Melbourne Stars when their new ball bowlers outwitted the Heat top order early in the first half. Although Max Bryant countered them with his attacking approach, the Stars bowlers managed to topple wickets from one end, with Maxwell’s scintillating catch in the 17th over making rounds on social media. 

With the score reading 106/5 in 16 overs, Dan Lawrence was handed the ball to take off pace against the Heat lower-middle order. On the first ball of the over, he came around the wicket and sprayed a fuller one at the stumps into new batter Will Prestwidge. The southpaw waited for the ball to come and tried to slog it down the ground for an aerial stroke. The ball projected to surpass the boundary cushions but Maxwell hurled from long on and leaped in a jiffy to pat the ball in the air before maintaining poise by stepping out of the ropes. The all-rounder almost neared the fence before he quickly leaped into the field of play and grabbed the ball firmly. To see a scintillating relayed catch take place in space of a second, the fellow cricketers and the audience was left amused. The work pulled off by Maxwell at the edge of the ropes was so good that Stoinis labeled it as “Greatest catch in the BBL” during post-match interviews, prompting the Twitterverse into a frenzy.
