The Only IPL Team to Defend Less Than 120 Runs Twice

Anupam Pandey

In the IPL, defending targets has been a lot challenging these days. A team which scores 120 runs is considered to have lost the game already. But there is a team which has managed to defend less than 120 runs not once but twice in their IPL history.

The Indian Premier League has now been all about batsmen. And defending the targets has been a lot challenging in the tournament now. But there is a team which has managed to defend a target lower than 120 runs not once but twice. Chennai Super Kings have done it once, by defending 118 runs. Mumbai Indians have also done it once, by defending 120 runs.

And even Sunrisers Hyderabad have done it once, defending 118 runs. But it is Punjab Kings, which has managed to defend the scores lower than 120, not once but twice in the IPL.

KXIP vs MI: IPL 2009

Kings XI Punjab achieved this for the first time in IPL 2009. The team went against Mumbai Indians at Durban, and managed to post just 119 runs for the loss of 8 wickets. Kumar Sangakkara was able to score 45 runs for KXIP. In response, Mumbai Indians managed to score just 116 runs for the loss of 7 wickets, losing the game by 3 runs. This was one of the lowest totals defended at that time.

PBKS vs KKR: IPL 2025

Punjab Kings were able to defend even a lower total this time, as they went against KKR in IPL 2025. At Mullanpur, Punjab was bowled out for a low total of 111 runs. It seemed to be an easy win for the Kolkata Knight Riders, but PBKS bowlers had some other plans. Yuzvendra Chahal took 4, while Marco Jansen took 3 wickets to bowl out KKR at the score of 95.

At a time when 200+ totals have been the new normal for every team, Punjab Kings have shown that bowling wins you games. They still remain the only team to have defended totals below 120 twice in the tournament.
