The organisers and sponsors of the Coupe de la Ligue are assessing options to organsie events related to the league in India. Indian tyre manufacturing company – BKT is the title sponsor of the tournament and the Ligue de Football Professionnel (LFP) may tie-up with an Indian league in near future.

If things go as per the plans, then the Indian football fans will get a better chance to follow French football in the country soon. As per Arvind Poddar, the chairman and managing director of BKT, the LFP is looking forward to bring Coupe de la Ligue to India. The league is currently “assessing options” to organise events related to it in the country.

“At this moment I can’t go into the specifics. All I can say is that the French leagues’ governing body is looking to bring Coupe de la Ligue to India,” Arvind told a group of Indian journalists, reported PTI.

“We are looking at various options and if they come to India, we’ll assess.”

Although things are not very clear at the moment, Poddar has said that the LFP may land with a tie with an Indian league in the near future. The officials of the LFP were in India in January this year and had some meetings with the Indian administrators.

“It’s not very clear whether they will be tying up with the Indian Super League. I know that they have had some meetings when their officials came to India in January.

Mumbai-based company BKT, which is also associated with Serie B in Italy and Australia’s Big Bash cricket league, signed an agreement with the LFP in September last year. Their association is for six years and Arvind is of the belief that there is not much difference between the sport in the two countries.

“I think there is not much difference between Indian football and French football. Football has always been very popular here. Football will catch up very fast in India. People in India are also getting crazy about football. It won’t be long until India catches up with world sports,” Arvind said.
