PKL league commissioner Anupam Goswami has underlined the fact that the orgainsers are trying to improve on the competitive part of the tournament in each passing season. The CEO of Mashal Sports also mentioned about having a home and away league format in the PKL in near future.

The seventh edition of the PKL is being branded as the toughest season and so far it has been one of the most competitive editions of the tournament as well. With less than a month to go for the final, we have only two teams – Dabang Delhi and Bengal Warriors - who have qualified for the playoffs. League commissioner and the CEO of Mashal Sports Anupam Goswami is excited with new teams doing well every passing season and has said that they want to improve PKL’s competitive part.

“We have been trying to improve on the competitive part of the league. Over six seasons, out of 12 teams, six teams have been champions and this time, new sets of teams are coming forward, which means the talent is distributed evenly. We have been trying to create better standards, bringing in technology like TV reviews,” Goswami told TOI.

PKL has been revolutionary for kabaddi and kabaddi players not only in India but also around the world. The players are financially settled now after the inception of the league in 2014. Goswami also highlighted that many public sector organisations have started giving jobs to kabaddi players again after the league gained popularity.

“The lowest salary for the youngest players is Rs. 6.6 lakh and for any professional in India, it is a good starting salary for 3-4 months of effort in any profession. In the first season, the highest salary was Rs. 12 lakh. Most of the players are employed in the public sector. Most of the banks and services who had given up on kabaddi talent, have started recruiting the players again,” the league commissioner explained.

PKL is being played with a format of one leg after another and there is no home and away league format just like the IPL. Goswami said that there are many things which are to be taken into account for the change in the structure and these are still the early years in the PKL and the franchises need to identify growth in the sport first.

“These are still the early years. To have a league format, you need to have stadia that are available for extended calendar. All the big clubs create businesses around home stadium. It is definitely the direction that we should go in. But in the first stage, the franchises need to identify growth in the sport,” the Mashal Sports’ CEO signed off.
