Sachin, Bindra, AR Rahman touted to become Olympics ambassadors after Salman Row
After Salman Khan's appointment as Olympics ambassador earned wide-spread criticism, the IOA has approached Sachin Tendulkar, Abhinav Bindra and A R Rahman. Salman had received flak from Olympians Yogeshwar Dutt, Milkha Singh for his alleged attempt to promote his movie 'Sultan' using the Olympics.
"We are in communication with Sachin Tendulkar and AR Rahman to become brand ambassadors of the Indian Olympic contingent. We are yet to get their reply," said Indian Olympic Association (IOA) vice president Tarlochan Singh to NDTV.
"We will rope in more people. Salman Khan will also remain," he added.
The channel also reported that the three are yet to respond to the request. It also added that 2008 Olympic gold medallist Abhinav Bindra had said he would react only after going through the proposal in detail.
Salman Khan's appointment as ambassador had invoked a lot of flak with his movie 'Sultan', which revolves around wrestling, curiously well-timed with the Olympics. While he received support from the movie world, with actor and BJP MP Kirron Kher and father Salim Khan coming out in support, the move has earned wide-spread reproach from sportspersons.
Update:
Abhinav Bindra has formally accepted the role of goodwill ambassador for the Indian contingent at the Olympics. He tweeted, "Received a letter this afternoon from the President and Secretary General of the IOA inviting me to be a goodwill ambassador. I am humbled that they thought I am worthy enough for this honour. I respectfully accept this with gratitude".
