The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) on Sunday has questioned the Sports Ministry’s decision of clearing four unrecommended officials on its own cost for the upcoming Asian Games in Indonesia. The IOA officials have stated that the officials and the support staff are not accredited for the Games.

After the Sports ministry cleared an 804-member Indian contingent for the Asian Games last week, the IOA has now shot off a letter to the Ministry asking how SC Roy (coach), Ruma Kar (masseur), Manoj Rana (coach) and A Jayaranjan (coach-swimming) were included in the contingent without any recommendation.

IOA Secretary General Rajeev Mehta has said that the national Olympic body had not sent the names of these four officials to the ministry. He further stated that since their (four officials) names do not feature in the long list, there is no accreditation and they could not be a part of the contingent.

“We had not sent the names of these four officials to the Ministry and we don’t know how their names have been included in the list. Their names do not feature in the long list. As a result, there is no accreditation for them and hence they cannot be a part of the Indian contingent. So, we have written a letter to the ministry regarding this issue,” Mehta told PTI.

Mehta also said that the IOA has requested the Ministry to reconsider its refusal to bear the cost of all the 26 team managers, pointing out that the federations will not be able to bear the expenses of sending them to the Games.

“The federations will not be able to send the team managers if they have to bear the cost by themselves. Then the teams will be playing without the managers and it may lead to problems,” Mehta added.

The IOA also mentioned in the letter that the contingent should include two more coaches in sport climbing as all the three Indian participants are minors. Only Amir Kumar had been cleared by the government to be part of the sport climbing contingent for the three players - Sanjay Shreya Nankar, Maibam Chingkheinganba, and Bharath Stephen Pereira.

“All the three are minors and according to the rules, each of them should be accompanied by a coach. So we have requested the Ministry to clear two more coaches in sport climbing,” he concluded.
