Golf | Four Indians in top 20 at the ongoing Asian Tour Qualifying final stage
In the Asian Tour Qualifying school final stage four Indians currently feature in the top 20 of the player's list. A total of 242 players including 17 Indians are competing in the event in order to secure a place for 35 cards in the two courses at Lakeview Resorts and Golf Club in Ho Chi Minh.
At the first round stage of the Asian Tour Qualifying school final stage event, Indian golfers have got a good start and four of them feature in the top 20 of the player's list. 19-year-old Thai-Japanese Kosuke Hamamoto, compatriot Kwanchai Tannin, China’s Xiao Bowen, Sweden’s Christoffer Baumann, Koreans Taewoo Kim and Jaewoong Eom and Japan’s Daisuke Yasumoto shared the lead with seven-under 64.
Indian golfer Chiragh Kumar was just behind them at the eighth position with six-under 65. Chiragh Kumar, a team silver medallist at the 2006 Asian Games, failed to hold onto his card and had to return to the Q-School. On the other hand, another 2010 Asian Games team silver medal winner, Abhijit Chadha (66)is currently placed in tied 12th place. Karandeep Kochhar and Aadil Bedi were at the tied 20th position carding out four-under 67.
Amongst the other Indian players, Amardip Malik and Arjun Prasad were tied 31st, whereas Aman Raj, Gaurav Pratap Singh and Veer Ahlawat shot 69 to be tied 50th. Sunit Chaurasia and Samarth Dwivedi shot one-under 70 to be tied 67.
All the other Indians will have a tough time since the first cut will be applied after the second round as top 140 players and ties will make the third round. The second cut will take the leading 70 players after 72 holes to play the final 18 holes. Finally, top-35 players and ties will be ranked for the 2019 season.
