225 athletes from India to participate in Australia Commonwealth Games 2018
An increased number of 225 athletes will travel to the Gold Coast for the upcoming CWG after Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) has increased the number of quota places for Indian sportspersons in two disciplines - boxing and athletics. The tournament will be held from April 4 to 15 in Australia.
While the decision is sure to help the Boxers big-time, the places will come at the expenses of the number of quota places for other disciplines, most notably gymnastics, shooting, and cycling. A total number of 15 sports discipline will have their representation in the tournament and a total of 225 athletes will travel to the Gold Coast. Earlier, during the last edition in Glasgow CWG in 2014, a total of 215 participants took part in the event.
Earlier, the CGF requested the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) and the Boxing Federation of India (BFI) to increase the number of quota places for the Indian pugilists. A lot of protests had happened by the players and sports administrators happened when the CGF had reduced the entries to 10 from the originally allocated 13.

After CGF extended an invitation to Indian Basketball team for the Games after a gap of eight years, Indian men’s and women’s team has straightaway added 24 quota places to the contingent. However, the sports that suffered the most is gymnastics, which saw its share being reduced from 10 at Glasgow to seven this time. However, India may further loss another quota place as India’s one of the biggest medal hopes, Dipa Karmakar had earlier pulled out of the event due to injury.
